IZ Silent Video

Running time:  1 hour

Synopsis:  Noise and rhythm silently collide.

(Note:  This movie is silent.)

Statement:  This movie was made for IZ, a Denver based Experimental Metal band, to be played as part of their performances.  I wanted video and audio to connect in audiences' minds so that video matches audio no matter which song IZ is playing during any part of the movie.

The ELAN Video Project 02

The ELAN Video Project 02

Completion date:  July 2006

Running time:  29 minutes 31 seconds

Synopsis:  Image follows sound to explore new worlds of motion, color, and texture.

Statement:  ELAN 02 is made up of 12 short movies which correspond to 12 songs from ELAN's Volumetric album.  All 12 parts can be played in succession, or any of the 12 parts can be played individually.  Volumetric struck me as having a lot of contrast between rough, "analog" textures and smooth "digital" textures.  To symbolize this, I repeated varied images of vinyl LPs, analog noise (static), CDs, and digital noise (pixillation) as unifying images and textures throughout ELAN 02.  In making these movies, I used the songs as starting points and purposely remained ignorant of their titles during the entire creative process.  I sought to create movies based on my raw reactions to the songs, free from preconceptions I would have had from knowing their names.

The ELAN Video Project 01

The ELAN Video Project 01

Completion date:  June 2004

Running time:  8 minutes 18 seconds

Synopsis:  Sound and motion merge to create an atmosphere of joyful curiosity, fearful realization, and reverent resignation.

Statement:  ELAN 01 explores the relationship between music, movement and emotion.  It groups four songs from ELAN's The Deluge of Soundtracks & Other Voices from the World's Silent Majority album.  Somewhat ambient in nature, ELAN 01 is primarily designed to be screened as a loop in a busy environment such as a bar or gallery.

Aliens and Star Travelers

Aliens and Star Travelers

Completion date:  February 2004

Running time:  7 minutes 23 seconds

Synopsis:  The memory of a UFO sighting leads to reconsidering the structure of the universe.

Statement:  Aliens and Star Travelers examines corporate manipulation of middle American culture from a first person dream perspective of alternative belief systems.  It has at its core three concepts: First is that a mean streak lies just under the tranquil surface of middle America.  Second is that globalist corporate interests are using "family values" to manipulate middle America.  Third is that the aim of mainstream "family oriented" culture seems to be to ignore or deny the first two concepts, and to marginalize anyone who asks questions.  Because mankind doesn't intuitively grasp that the universe is infinite and chaotic, we're inclined to come up with "grand puppet-master" models of how the universe works.  If the model we're being spoon-fed doesn't add up, it seems reasonable to experiment with alternative models.  After all, why is belief in the existence of UFOs considered outlandish while the belief that someone rose from the dead to save us from our sins is not?

The Red Wall

The Red Wall

Completion date:  July 2002

Running time:  5 minutes 37 seconds

Synopsis:  Leaders conspire to take away our freedom.  The public blindly submits without protest.  Those who disagree writhe in inner conflict, economic slaves to the lie which surrounds them.

Statement:  The Red Wall is about the alienation, fear, and hopelessness of dissent in mainstream American society.
